IGLOO KINDERGARTEN

ADAPTATION TO A VERNACULAR PRECEDENT

The objective of Adaptive Architecture was to design buildings which contain vernacular characterirstics for a specific location/climate zone. My vernacular precedent was the Igloo, and my site was in the arctic tundra. The preschool borrowed from the Igloo, and it focused on ground manipulation and layering thick insulation to create a comfotable study environment. The preschool was half submerged underground to prevent heat from escaping, and it was insulated by a primary layer of wall constructed by blocks of ice. The program was divided into three large sections and these large spaces were then further divided up by a series of small partitions.
