950 Gough Street

Marriage of a forgotten church and a modern apartment building

During my Internship at Handel Architects in San Francisco, I was part of a team which was responsible for redesigning 950 Gough Street. The project is interesting because it involves a rather unique and rare combination of programs, especially in the city of San Francisco. The site was originally occupied by a 19th century pedestrian church. The church functioned as a vital component of the community until a fire which burnt it to the ground in the early 90s. A low-rise residential building was commissioned by a developer recently, and part of the plan is to bring back the church as well. My job was to aid the senior designers visualizing the ideas, creating different schemes for the design and form of the church and the facade of the apartment building.
